Vote for the NAU Athlete of the Week

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – This week, fans will get to choose for who they feel is most deserving of being named the NAU Athlete of the Week from three athletes nominated by the NAU Media Relations office. Fans will be given the opportunity to vote for the Athlete of the Week via the poll question on the nauathletics.com home page, as well as the link above. Voting for the week's nominees will be open until the next poll opens on Monday, but the winner will be selected based on the totals on Thursday morning at 10 a.m.

Last week, the NAU men's basketball team snapped a four-game losing streak by defeating CSU Bakersfield on Sunday, 80-67, after falling to Pepperdine, 49-40 earlier in the week. The women's basketball team competed in just the second double overtime game in program history, taking Big 10 power Nebraska to double OT before coming up short, 97-88. The track & field team was represented by Diego Estrada at the Hoosier Open on Friday with Estrada taking first in the 5,000-meter run against five other runners.

For the week of December 12, the following three athletes are your nominees for NAU Athlete of the Week.

Men's Basketball:

James Douglas – Fr. – Guard – Chino Hills, Calif.

Douglas led the Lumberjacks to their third win of the season over CSU Bakersfield, with a career-high 22 points. He shot 9-13 from the field, including 4-5 from three-point range, to go along with a rebound, three assists and one steal in 36 minutes in the victory. Earlier in the week, Douglas tied for the team-high with 10 points in NAU's loss to Pepperdine. He also added four rebounds and a steal. For the week, Douglas averaged 16 points, 2.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1 steal per game, while shooting 48% from the field and 42% from behind the arc. His 12.4 points per game average is tops on the team and he has now led or co-led the team in scoring in six of the 10 games this season. Douglas also is second on the team in assists with 25, first on the team in three-point makes with 19 and second in three-point percentage at 40%.

Track & Field:

Diego Estrada – Jr. – Distance – Salinas, Calif.

Estrada finished the 5,000-meter run at the University of Indiana Hoosier Open this past weekend, five seconds under the NCAA Automatic Qualifying time, earning him a bid in the 2012 NCAA Indoor National Championships. His time of 13:39.54 is currently the fastest indoor time in the nation this year, and is a new Gladstein Fieldhouse record.

Women's Basketball:

Amanda Frost - So. - Guard - Riverside, Calif.

Frost led NAU with a career-high 24 points as the Lumberjacks pushed 9-1 Nebraska, ranked 27th nationally in the AP poll having defeated two ranked teams this season, to double overtime before taking a 97-88 defeat. She went 9-15 from the field and 6 of 9 from three-point range, making six of her first-seven three point attempts. She also added three assists, three steals, and one block in 31 minutes of playing time in just the second double-OT game in NAU program history. For the season, Frost, who is in her first season at NAU after transferring from Fullerton College, leads the team with 18 three-point makes, is second on the team in averaging 9.3 points per game, and is tied for second with 17 total steals.
