Brooke Andersen has Sixth-Best Performance of All-Time in Hammer Throw as NAU T/F Competes at the Opening Day of the Baldy Castillo Invitational

Brooke Andersen set the meet, NAU and Big Sky record as she recorded the sixth-best women's hammer throw in NCAA history down at ASU.

TEMPE, Ariz. - Brooke Andersen shattered the meet, school and Big Sky Conference record as she recorded the sixth-best mark of all-time in NCAA history in the women's hammer throw as the Northern Arizona University track and field program competed at the opening day of Arizona State University's Baldy Castillo Invitational at the Sun Angel Stadium on Friday.

Andersen rewrote the record books with a best mark of 70.98-meters to take the victory in the event. It bested her old personal best of 68.62-meters that earned Andersen a second-place finish at the 2017 NCAA Outdoor Championships.

"Coach Ott and Brooke knew that throw was waiting and it's fantastic that it's her starting point in our opening competition," director of track and field Michael Smith said. "She made a statement today. She's truly one of the best in this event in NCAA history. This is going to be a special season."

Maggie Carruth and Luis Grijalva returned from a redshirt indoor season and placed second in the men's and women's 1500-meter run, respectively. Carruth posted a time of 4:29.66 while Grijalva finished with a 3:45.75.

Both Pipi Eitel and Kyle Havriliak set new personal bests in their first running of the men's and women's 2000-meter steeplechase. Eitel placed third with a time of 7:07.63 while Havriliak finished seventh with a 6:13.19 performance..

As a unit the Lumberjacks set one new school record and 12 personal bests.

"We were extremely pleased with efforts on the track tonight," Smith added. "For our first outdoor meet the markers we're watching for are all there."

Northern Arizona will be back in action with the final day of the Baldy Castillo Invitational on Saturday. The field portion of the program will get underway at 10 a.m. MST while the track events will begin at 2 p.m. MST.
