J. Lawrence Walkup
(Educator and Administrator, 1948-79)
Dr. Walkup served as a school superintendent, principal and athletic coach. He taught mathematics and science in Missouri high schools. In 1948, Dr. Walkup came to Arizona State College as a professor, later serving as a Dean, and retiring in 1979 as president of Northern Arizona University. Few educators are ever given the opportunity to transform a college into a university. Dr. Walkup was an ardent supporter of intercollegiate athletics. His achievements in the field of education and administration are also well-known and documented throughout the State of Arizona and the United States.
